Since they started playing together in 2017, EHM have been involved in an unending process of communicative ecstasy. The pauses between concerts and albums are merely the breaths between clauses. Fred Moten’s reflection on Cecil Taylor's remark on free music, that “words don’t go there”, is the only register I know through which words might reach EHM’s work. This music is not only about communication but exists only by way of its improbability. If words don’t go there, perhaps they are not needed in the form we know them. So once words are optional extras, what might we say? Through the deferral of the conventional utterances of critical commentary into the “not-in-between” of these three musicians – who are equally at home leaving themselves behind to access a collective experience as they are resting in the singularities that make each player such a remarkable individual – we can maybe make some words that will go there. Insofar as there is a place of temporary consistency that reappears with the cessation of the breath’s pause, Achromatopsia is the continuation of this place’s unfolding articulation. The album’s name refers to a condition in which colour is absent from vision. This should be understood as a refusal of those lazy paint pallet metaphors that hamper our vocabulary about improvised music. If our words won’t go there, we’ll have to reengineer them until they do. EHM’s work on this record becomes the strata of a new world; to produce a public sphere for a place where words work differently. Without verbalising a thing, they set about constructing new avenues for communication and relation that can make more supple the certainties and strictures of our humdrum world of the sixth mass extinction. The kinds of subtlety, tenderness, violence, rage and desire that exists only when these three play together, within and against each other induces us to think our vernaculars of speech and feeling anew. They show us what it’s like to collapse the distance between signification and sensation. They show words where to go. - Macon Holt
